A kayak expedition around Waitukabuli

On September 1st, 2021, two kayakers successfully circumnavigated the Caribbean island of Dominica. Dominica, also known as Waitukabuli in the Amerindian native tongue,  translates as “long is her body.” Our kayakers, Weston Moses and Kerry Alleyne, residents of Dominica, certainly came to know the truth of that translation over an expedition time of 4 days and 7 hours.

Why we keep asking the same questions of each Olympic cycle, Every four years, the Antiguan and Barbudan public asks the same questions of the athletes competing at the Summer Olympics. Why aren’t we in the finals and semi-finals?

This Olympic year, Antigua and Barbuda put forth six athletes to compete at the Tokyo Olympics. From athletics, Cejhae Greene and Joella Lloyd; for swimming Stefano Mitchell and Samantha Roberts; from boxing Alston Ryan and in sailing Jalese Gordon. Of the six, Green and Ryan made official qualifying standards. The remaining four were given places through the universality system that allows developing nations to send their best athletes to the Games without making official qualifying standards.

These were tribes of indigenous people who lived across the archipelago of islands located between South America and North America that today we call the Caribbean. These were the tribes that met Christopher Columbus upon his “discovery” of what he called the West Indies.

I WAS THERE THE DAY JOHN LENNON DIED. NUPPY

On my most recent 2023 trip to Antigua & Barbuda,  I happened to be waiting my turn at a local bank in the town of English Harbour wearing my favourite Beatles T shirt when an elderly man approached commenting on the picture of the four lads. He told me his name was Cecil Andres Carlos but affectionately known as NUPPY. He said he was born in 1951 in English Harbour and fathered 10 boys and 5 girls.
